Teaching & Learning

Embark on an enriching academic journey at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Established in 2001, IHSS is dedicated to fostering innovative interdisciplinary research and education in the humanities and social sciences, particularly in the realm of Chinese and Asian studies. Serving as a vibrant hub for the exploration of societies and cultures in China and across Asia, IHSS collaborates closely with leading academic institutions worldwide.

Our research postgraduate programmes, the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), offer a strong emphasis on key themes such as the quantitative history of China, Asian religion and spirituality, Chinese business history, and Chinese archaeology and early development history. At the core of our mission is a commitment to original research and knowledge discovery, providing a dynamic and stimulating environment that nurtures critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and creativity.

The one-year taught Master of Family Wealth Management programme (FWM), jointly offered by IHSS and the HKU Business School, offers an interdisciplinary mix of skills and knowledge courses that will help students develop the soft and hard competencies required for a successful career in this rising industry.

To facilitate the teaching of the trans- and interdisciplinary undergraduate curriculum, IHSS is one of the offering units of common core courses in HKU and part of the team to provide the key holistic learning experience for all HKU undergraduates.

Our programmes are thoughtfully designed to challenge students and equip them with the necessary skills to excel in their chosen fields. Join us at IHSS and embark on a fulfilling academic journey of exploration and growth.
