SUMMARY:Speculative Thoughts on Writing Histories of Capitalism for Asia: Industrious Accumulation in Late Twentieth-Century Hong Kong and China
DESCRIPTION:Table of Contents \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Abstract \n \n \n \n \n To some\, family offices — private organizations established by wealthy families to manage and oversee their wealth — seem shrouded in mystery. In the latest edition of the HKU Family Wealth Lecture Series\, we will explore the role of non-family professionals within family offices. Join us for an engaging public lecture with Bill Stacey\, a seasoned investment counsellor who has worked with many family offices. With extensive experience across Asia\, Australia\, and global markets\, Bill offers invaluable insights into the world of family offices and investment strategy. He will cover key topics including how to find roles within family offices\, understanding the principles and goals of family principals\, and building effective family office organization structure. He will also discuss the challenges of constructing and implementing investment strategies in today’s uncertain environment\, addressing issues like innovation\, inflation\, and government intervention. The session will also touch upon Hong Kong’s position as a hub for family offices and the critical role of philanthropy within family investment teams. For students\, educators\, and industry practitioners alike\, this lecture offers a rare glimpse into working for a family office from a seasoned investment expert. \n \n \n \n About the Speaker \n \n \n \n Bill Stacey is an investment counsellor working with funds and family offices.  He was Chief Investment Officer of the Hinrich Foundation. He has contributed market leading thinking on investment strategy\, financial\, banking and monetary systems\, with a particular focus on China and the Asia region.  After a period as policy advisor for a legislator he led strategy and finance teams for a major Australian commercial bank which had operations in Australia\, Asia\, the UK and the US. His strategy work revived and restructured businesses delivering significant shareholder value.  During the Asia crisis Bill was involved in sovereign debt restructuring and bank rescue negotiations. Entering investment banking\, Bill led highly rated research teams and with Credit Suisse was the lead analyst on some of the era’s largest IPO’s. He was head of the Asia operations for financial specialist investment bank KBW and has been a partner and early-stage investor in 2 start-up financial firms. He was the founding Chairman and remains a director of the Lion Rock Institute\, Hong Kong’s leading free market-oriented policy research thinktank.
